AlaskaConcealed Carry Permit & Reciprocity
Alaska is a permitless (constitutional) carry state — the first in the nation, since 2003. Anyone 21 or older who may legally possess a firearm may carry it openly or concealed without a permit (AS 11.61.220). The Alaska Concealed Handgun Permit (ACHP), issued by the Department of Public Safety, remains available and is worth holding for out-of-state reciprocity; it requires a handgun training course, fingerprints, and a fee, and is valid for five years. Alaska is a duty-to-inform state: a person carrying a concealed handgun who is contacted by a peace officer must immediately inform the officer and allow the officer to secure the handgun during the contact (AS 11.61.220). Under AS 18.65.748, Alaska recognizes a concealed handgun permit issued by any other state for a holder 21 or older.
