IowaConcealed Carry Permit & Reciprocity
Iowa is a permitless (constitutional) carry state as of July 1, 2021 (HF 756). A person 18 or older who may lawfully possess a handgun may carry it openly or concealed without a permit. Iowa still issues a Permit to Carry Weapons through the sheriff of the applicant's county in two classes: the Nonprofessional Permit (the standard civilian permit) and the Professional Permit (for a person whose employment reasonably justifies being armed). The permit costs $50 (new) / $25 (renewal), is valid for five years, and is worth holding for out-of-state reciprocity. Open carry is lawful without a permit, and Iowa has no duty to inform. Under Iowa Code 724.11A ('universal recognition'), Iowa honors all valid concealed carry permits issued by any other state.
