Steps to get a Iowa PCW

  1. Confirm you are eligible. Be at least 18 years old and a Iowa resident, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
  2. Complete the required firearms training. The nonprofessional permit requires proof of firearms training — a handgun safety/training course, hunter-education course, or law-enforcement/military training (Iowa Code 724.9).
  3. Submit your application to Iowa County Sheriffs. File your Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons (PCW) application with Iowa County Sheriffs. See the official page for forms and instructions.
  4. Pay the application fee. Pay the PCW application fee of $50. $50 for a new permit; $25 renewal (Iowa county sheriff).
  5. Receive your permit and note the renewal date. Once approved, your PCW is valid for 5 years, after which it must be renewed.

Note: Iowa allows permitless carry, so this permit is optional in-state — but it is still worth holding for reciprocity when traveling.
