Utah Constitutional Carry (Permitless Carry)

Who can carry concealed in Utah without a permit, the minimum age, and why the CFP still matters for reciprocity when you travel.

Residents and non-residents

Utah has permitless (constitutional) carry since May 5, 2021 (HB 60). A person 21 or older who may lawfully possess a firearm may carry a firearm openly or concealed without a permit, and residency is not required. Note: permitless carry does NOT authorize carry on public K-12 school premises — a concealed firearm permit is required to carry there (Utah Code §76-10-505.5).

The Utah Utah Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP) still matters

The CFP remains available in Utah even though a permit is not required to carry concealed within the state. It is worth obtaining anyway: most states that grant reciprocity honor a valid out-of-state permit, not another state's permitless-carry law. Holding the CFP is typically what lets a Utah resident carry concealed while traveling to a state that recognizes it.

Utah constitutional carry FAQ

Can I carry concealed in Utah without a permit?
Yes. Utah is a constitutional (permitless) carry state — an eligible adult at least 21 years old who may lawfully possess a firearm can carry a concealed handgun in Utah without first obtaining the CFP.
Should I still get a Utah CFP if I can carry permitless?
Yes. The CFP remains available in Utah and is worth holding because permitless carry is only valid inside Utah's own borders — most other states extend reciprocity to a valid permit, not to Utah's permitless-carry law. A Utah CFP lets you carry concealed while traveling to states that honor it.
Does permitless carry in Utah work in other states?
No. Permitless carry is a Utah-specific legal status and does not travel with you. Reciprocity agreements are between states' permit systems — carrying in another state generally requires either that state's own permitless-carry law (if it has one) or a permit that state's reciprocity list recognizes.
