Steps to get a District of Columbia CCL
- Confirm you are eligible. Be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
- Complete the required firearms training. 16 hours of training plus a live-fire range qualification with an MPD-certified concealed-carry instructor (a non-resident may satisfy some or all training with a qualifying out-of-state course) — D.C. Code §7-2509.02.
- Get fingerprinted. Submit fingerprints for the state and FBI background check as part of the application.
- Submit your application to Metropolitan Police Department. File your District of Columbia Concealed Carry Pistol License (CCL) application with Metropolitan Police Department. See the official page for forms and instructions.
- Pay the application fee. Pay the CCL application fee of $75. $75 for the Concealed Carry Pistol License, plus firearm-registration, fingerprint, and training costs.
- Receive your permit and note the renewal date. Once approved, your CCL is valid for 2 years, after which it must be renewed.
