Steps to get a District of Columbia CCL

  1. Confirm you are eligible. Be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
  2. Complete the required firearms training. 16 hours of training plus a live-fire range qualification with an MPD-certified concealed-carry instructor (a non-resident may satisfy some or all training with a qualifying out-of-state course) — D.C. Code §7-2509.02.
  3. Get fingerprinted. Submit fingerprints for the state and FBI background check as part of the application.
  4. Submit your application to Metropolitan Police Department. File your District of Columbia Concealed Carry Pistol License (CCL) application with Metropolitan Police Department. See the official page for forms and instructions.
  5. Pay the application fee. Pay the CCL application fee of $75. $75 for the Concealed Carry Pistol License, plus firearm-registration, fingerprint, and training costs.
  6. Receive your permit and note the renewal date. Once approved, your CCL is valid for 2 years, after which it must be renewed.
