Steps to get a Georgia WCL
- Confirm you are eligible. Be at least 21 years old and a Georgia resident, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
- Get fingerprinted. Submit fingerprints for the state and FBI background check as part of the application.
- Submit your application to Georgia Probate Court (of the applicant's county of residence). File your Georgia Weapons Carry License (WCL) application with Georgia Probate Court (of the applicant's county of residence). See the official page for forms and instructions.
- Pay the application fee. Pay the WCL application fee of $30. Statutory application/renewal fee is $30.00 (O.C.G.A. § 16-11-129); original applications typically cost more once mandatory fingerprinting and the background check are added (e.g. roughly $75–80 in many counties).
- Receive your permit and note the renewal date. Once approved, your WCL is valid for 5 years, after which it must be renewed.
Note: Georgia allows permitless carry, so this permit is optional in-state — but it is still worth holding for reciprocity when traveling.
