Steps to get a Indiana LTCH

  1. Confirm you are eligible. Be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
  2. Get fingerprinted. Submit fingerprints for the state and FBI background check as part of the application.
  3. Submit your application to Indiana State Police — Firearms Licensing Unit. File your License to Carry Handgun (LTCH) application with Indiana State Police — Firearms Licensing Unit. See the official page for forms and instructions.
  4. Pay the application fee. Pay the LTCH application fee of $0. The License to Carry Handgun is fee-exempt (free): the five-year LTCH became fee-exempt July 1, 2020, and the lifetime LTCH became fee-exempt July 1, 2021 (Indiana State Police — Firearms Licensing). Fingerprint/vendor charges may still apply. The five-year and lifetime LTCH may be applied for and held concurrently.
  5. Receive your permit and note the renewal date. Once approved, your LTCH is valid for 5 years, after which it must be renewed.

Note: Indiana allows permitless carry, so this permit is optional in-state — but it is still worth holding for reciprocity when traveling.
