Steps to get a Louisiana CHP

  1. Confirm you are eligible. Be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
  2. Complete the required firearms training. The applicant must demonstrate competency with a handgun — satisfied by an approved NRA or state-police-recognized course (including live range fire), law-enforcement firearms training, or qualifying military service (R.S. 40:1379.3(D)). Lifetime-permit holders must re-demonstrate live-fire competency every five years.
  3. Get fingerprinted. Submit fingerprints for the state and FBI background check as part of the application.
