How to get a Michigan Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL): fees, training, fingerprints, processing time, and renewal.

$100 — The original CPL application and licensing fee is $100.00, paid to the county clerk (MCL § 28.425b), plus a $15.00 fingerprinting fee. Renewal is $115.00, submitted to the county clerk or online/by mail through the Michigan State Police (MCL § 28.425l).

Required — 8 hours (incl. 3 hr live fire) — Applicants must complete a pistol safety training course, provided within the 5 years preceding the application, of not less than 8 hours of instruction that is certified by the state or a state or national firearms-training organization (MCL § 28.425j). The program must provide at least 5 hours of classroom instruction covering the safe storage, use, and handling of a pistol (including for child safety); ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of pistol shooting; shooting positions; firearms and the law, civil liability, and the use of deadly force (this portion taught by an attorney or a person trained in the use of deadly force); avoiding and controlling a violent confrontation; and all laws applicable to carrying a concealed pistol in Michigan — plus at least 3 hours of instruction on a firing range requiring the firing of at least 30 rounds of ammunition, and a certificate of completion. Renewal applicants may certify to a reduced review (3 hours' review plus 1 hour of range time) instead of retaking the full course (MCL § 28.425l(9)).

Steps to get a Michigan CPL

  1. Confirm you are eligible. Be at least 21 years old and a Michigan resident, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
  2. Complete the required firearms training. Applicants must complete a pistol safety training course, provided within the 5 years preceding the application, of not less than 8 hours of instruction that is certified by the state or a state or national firearms-training organization (MCL § 28.425j).   3. Get fingerprinted. Submit fingerprints for the state and FBI background check as part of the application.

  5. Pay the application fee. Pay the CPL application fee of $100. The original CPL application and licensing fee is $100.00, paid to the county clerk (MCL § 28.425b), plus a $15.00 fingerprinting fee. Renewal is $115.00, submitted to the county clerk or online/by mail through the Michigan State Police (MCL § 28.425l).
  6. Receive your permit and note the renewal date. Once approved, your CPL is valid for 5 years, after which it must be renewed.
