Steps to get a Minnesota PTC
- Confirm you are eligible. Be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, and not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
- Complete the required firearms training. The applicant must present evidence of training in the safe use of a pistol received within one year of the application, from a certified instructor; the course includes live-fire (§624.714 subd 2a). The statute does not fix a minimum number of hours.
- Submit your application to Minnesota County Sheriffs. File your Minnesota Permit to Carry a Pistol (PTC) application with Minnesota County Sheriffs. See the official page for forms and instructions.
- Pay the application fee. Pay the PTC application fee of $100. The sheriff's new-permit fee may not exceed the actual and reasonable processing cost or $100, whichever is less; renewal may not exceed $75 (§624.714 subd 3(f), subd 7(c)).
- Receive your permit and note the renewal date. Once approved, your PTC is valid for 5 years, after which it must be renewed.
