Florida has permitless (constitutional) concealed carry since July 1, 2023 (HB 543). A person 21 or older who is not otherwise disqualified and who satisfies the eligibility criteria of § 790.06(2) may carry concealed without a license (§ 790.01(1), Fla. Stat.); residency is not required. A permitless carrier must carry valid identification and display it on an officer's demand. (A 2025 appellate ruling has been litigated over the 18-20 age line; the statute as written requires age 21 — operator should re-verify.)

The Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License (CWFL) still matters

The CWFL remains available in Florida even though a permit is not required to carry concealed within the state. It is worth obtaining anyway: most states that grant reciprocity honor a valid out-of-state permit, not another state's permitless-carry law. Holding the CWFL is typically what lets a Florida resident carry concealed while traveling to a state that recognizes it.

Florida constitutional carry FAQ

Can I carry concealed in Florida without a permit?
Yes. Florida is a constitutional (permitless) carry state — an eligible adult at least 21 years old who may lawfully possess a firearm can carry a concealed handgun in Florida without first obtaining the CWFL.
Should I still get a Florida CWFL if I can carry permitless?
Yes. The CWFL remains available in Florida and is worth holding because permitless carry is only valid inside Florida's own borders — most other states extend reciprocity to a valid permit, not to Florida's permitless-carry law. A Florida CWFL lets you carry concealed while traveling to states that honor it.
Does permitless carry in Florida work in other states?
No. Permitless carry is a Florida-specific legal status and does not travel with you. Reciprocity agreements are between states' permit systems — carrying in another state generally requires either that state's own permitless-carry law (if it has one) or a permit that state's reciprocity list recognizes.
