Georgia has permitless (constitutional) carry since April 12, 2022 (SB 319). Any "lawful weapons carrier" — a person 21 or older (or 18+ who has completed basic training and is actively serving in, or was honorably discharged from, the U.S. armed forces) who is not prohibited from possessing a firearm — may carry a handgun without a Weapons Carry License (O.C.G.A. §§ 16-11-125.1, 16-11-126). Residency is not required to carry permitlessly.

The Georgia Georgia Weapons Carry License (WCL) still matters
The WCL remains available in Georgia even though a permit is not required to carry concealed within the state. It is worth obtaining anyway: most states that grant reciprocity honor a valid out-of-state permit, not another state's permitless-carry law. Holding the WCL is typically what lets a Georgia resident carry concealed while traveling to a state that recognizes it.

Georgia constitutional carry FAQ
- Can I carry concealed in Georgia without a permit?
- Yes. Georgia is a constitutional (permitless) carry state — an eligible adult at least 21 years old who may lawfully possess a firearm can carry a concealed handgun in Georgia without first obtaining the WCL.
- Should I still get a Georgia WCL if I can carry permitless?
- Yes. The WCL remains available in Georgia and is worth holding because permitless carry is only valid inside Georgia's own borders — most other states extend reciprocity to a valid permit, not to Georgia's permitless-carry law. A Georgia WCL lets you carry concealed while traveling to states that honor it.
- Does permitless carry in Georgia work in other states?
- No. Permitless carry is a Georgia-specific legal status and does not travel with you. Reciprocity agreements are between states' permit systems — carrying in another state generally requires either that state's own permitless-carry law (if it has one) or a permit that state's reciprocity list recognizes.
